On Monday April 21st, Google launched a search algorithm update that has been viciously nicknamed “Mobilegeddon”, in reference to the changes it will make to mobile searches. This change will only affect Google search results done on a mobile device.  Google will now prioritize websites that it deems mobile friendly. Sites that are not up to par will drop down and appear much lower in search results. Google spokeswoman Krisztina Radosavljevic-Szilagyi expanded on the decision in the following statement, “As people increasingly search on their mobile devices,” she said, “we want to make sure they can find content that’s not only relevant and timely, but also easy to read and interact with on smaller mobile screens.” (NPR)shutterstock_202808998 [Converted]

What is the criteria for deeming a site mobile friendly? Responsiveness. Responsiveness is a website’s ability to adapt and adjust to any size desktop, mobile, or tablet screen and remain easy to navigate, interact with, and read.

What makes a site responsive? Responsiveness is an approach to web design. It not something that exists on your website if you did not purposefully design it to be.

Interacting with mobile friendly websites is something we all do every day. We have all found a site on our phone and when we saw that we had to zoom out and scroll to the left and right to read it, we quickly went back and found a better one.

It is hard to know how many sites will be affected by this change in Google’s search algorithm, but the emphasis is most likely on small local businesses that rely on location-based searches; the majority of which are done on a smart phone, on the go.

Google has stated that as soon as a site becomes mobile friendly, it will immediately show up higher on mobile searches. Google has even provided a “Mobile-Friendly Test” to check your sites responsiveness.
